The Graduate Program of Contemporary International Relations Studies (CIRS) was founded in 2006 financed by China Scholarship Council(CSC), managed by the Institute of International Studies, Jilin University,to provide international students academic and extra-curricular lectures and activities. Since its founding, the Graduate program has enlarged in quality and quantity by admitting decade of excellent students from all over the world. So far, more than 60 students have graduated and they have been hired in the field of government, diplomacy, academia, broadcasting companies and news agencies, multinational corporations, etc.
I.Faculty/supervising team
The Institute offers both M.A. degree program and Ph.D. program on Contemporary International Relations. The faculty comprises of distinguished experts of JLU and other universities home and abroad. The supervising team is made up of 13 faculty members (including 6 full professors, and all members have Ph.Ds.) employed from various academic fields in JLU, including world history, international politics, international law, world economics, etc. Each Year we invite a world-renowned professor to chair thesis/dissertation defense.
II.Degree Requirements
1.Study Duration
For the M.A. degree, four semesters of resident graduate study must be completed.
For the Ph.D. degree, six semesters of graduate study are required.
2.CreditRequirement
M.A. —22 credit hours of course credit in two years.
Ph.D. —16 credit hours of course credit in three years.Every student should present in a seminar, workshop, or conference.
3. Thesis/Dissertation Prospectus and Schedule
The student must prepare an appropriate M.A. thesis/Ph.D. dissertation proposaland defend it before the supervisor of his/her committee by the beginning of the thirdsemester of the program. The prospectus should include the tentative title, a statement of the scope and objectives of the inquiry, the questions to be answered or the hypotheses to be tested, indication of the major sources and methods to be employed, and preliminary outline and bibliography.
4. Deadlines for Thesis/DissertationSubmission
April 1 for a degree to be conferred in June.
October 1 for a degree to be conferred inDecember.
5. Publication
According to relative regulations of JLU, eachPh.D. candidateis required to publish at least two journal articles as the first authorduring resident graduate study.
III. Academic Activities
The graduate program has global academic links with leading universities in the U.S., U.K., Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Philippines. Through thiscooperation, the program provides students with distinctive academic opportunities such as the English School Theory Workshop, Annual Graduate Workshop on East Asia, etc. Students are also encouraged to attend public seminars and lectures organized by JLU and other Institutes.
IV. Cultural/Social Activities
ChangchunCityis famous for her excellent natural/urban environment and historical legacies. As a CSC funded program, it providesvariousopportunities for students to get to know Chinese culture and society in Changchun and its neighboring areas. Previously this program has successfullyorganized students to travel to nearby the city and the countryside.for the purpose of broadening the horizon of students. Students can also participate in several activities such as cultural festival to promote mutual understanding between them and Chinese people and amonginternational students.
