From“Radical Revolution”to“Launching of Modernization” : An Analysis of the Transition of Indonesian Foreign Policy under the Perspective of Cold War in Southeast Asia

Abstract: In late 1960s,foreign policy of Indonesia experienced a sharp transition from a radically revolutionary policy opposing colonialism and imperialism to a development and modernization oriented policy which accepted assistance from US - led Western world and international organizations. This transition was the result of multiple factors including the escalation of Malaysia crisis,involvement of America,Soviet Union and China,and changes in Indonesian domestic politics following the September 30th Movement. Transition in Indonesia's foreign policy from radical revolution to development and modernization made it possible for regional cooperation in Southeast Asia while the founding of ASEAN in 1967 marked the idea of development prevailing in most regional countries. As a whole,issues of“Cold War”and“Revolution”, “De - colonization”,“Modernization”shaped the historical image of multiple constructions in Southeast Asia.
